Resumes are for marketing the candidate. It is therefore important to decide on which format is used to write the resume. Resume should be prepared based on the type of job one is applying for. There are four types of formats in which resume can be prepared. They are Chronological, functional, combination and Targeted. Below are the explanations of each type of resume and which format should be followed for which type of job.

Chronological resume :
*Chronological resume format is the most popular format used for preparing the resume. Previous work experience details of the candidates are given beginning with the recent job and going back to the previous jobs. Most of the hiring managers prefer chronological resumes as these give the quick access to the details of work experience.
*Candidates who have a good work experience, the experience is most related to the job applied for and those who have no gaps in their work history can use Chronological format for preparing the resume.

Functional resume:
*Functional resumes give more importance to abilities and previous experience of the candidates. The dates of the previous employment are not mentioned in this type of resume.
*Functional resume format is best suited for those who want to de-emphasize the gaps in their employment, or fresh graduates with almost no work experience or those who have no clear career goal.

Combination resume:
*Combination resume format highlights the abilities and work experience of the candidate and the work history is also mentioned in a chronological order.
*Combination resume format should be used by those who want to highlight the work experience to impress the prospective employers.

Targeted Resume
*Targeted resumes are those which are tailor made for the particular job. The resume is prepared in relation with the job being applied for and the objective, qualification and abilities of the candidate are written to suit the job.
*Though preparing targeted resume takes lot of time, it is the most suitable to increase the chances of getting an interview call.
